UCF Recreation and Wellness Center Expansion

Borrelli + Partners was commissioned by UCF to design the expansion to the Recreation and Wellness Center. The expansion provides enhanced program opportunities and much needed additional space for cardio and fitness activities.

The 62,000 square-foot Phase II expansion houses a variety of program activities. The primary use of the facility is for student recreation and wellness and includes spaces for cardio, fitness, indoor racquet ball courts, multi-purpose rooms, offices, wet classrooms, and new locker and rest rooms. The facility features two Multi Activity Court (MAC) gymnasiums designed to accommodate basketball, volleyball, and indoor hockey with built in second level spectator seating. The expansion significantly assisted in the University’s mission of providing high-quality recreational facilities and programs to a growing student body.

The facility also features a new 25-yard by 25-meter Myrtha® pool, designed to support both multi-activity recreational programming and competitive aquatic use. The pool accommodates a variety of student recreation, training, instruction, and competition needs while providing the flexibility necessary for year-round campus programming. Myrtha® pool systems offer significant long-term advantages for collegiate recreation and wellness facilities. The modular stainless-steel construction provides exceptional durability and resistance to corrosion, helping extend the service life of the pool while reducing the maintenance demands associated with traditional pool construction. Unlike conventional concrete pools, the Myrtha system is engineered to accommodate movement and changing environmental conditions, helping minimize cracking and deterioration over time.

The University of Central Florida tasked B+P to achieve LEED® Silver, but the team was able to achieve LEED® Gold Certification at no extra cost to the University. By implementing as many innovative credits as possible and carefully planning to achieve every point possible within the current budget, B+P was able to maximize sustainable techniques and implement them into this project.
