Summary
Fire Station No. 39 reflects the City of DeBary’s commitment to strengthening public safety through thoughtfully designed facilities. Borrelli + Partners provided architectural, interior design, and landscape architectural services.
The 7,000 SF facility was thoughtfully designed to support first responders’ daily operations and long-term needs, featuring three apparatus bays, living quarters with individual bunks, shared restrooms, a kitchen, and day rooms, as well as a diesel-fueled emergency generator to provide reliable backup power. The heated apparatus bays are equipped with a vehicle fume detection system, enhancing life safety by helping ensure a clean and safe environment for personnel. The heated apparatus bays not only protect vehicles from the elements, but the vehicle fume detection system ensures that the air remains safe and clean for personnel, a small but critical feature that enhances life safety every day. The design also emphasizes flexibility and efficiency, ensuring that as the community grows, the station can adapt to new equipment, personnel, and operational needs without major renovations. Every detail, from the layout of the living quarters to the positioning of the apparatus bays, was carefully considered to support first responders’ day-to-day workflow. The interior spaces were designed with both comfort and practicality in mind. The kitchen and day room provide areas for rest and recovery during long shifts. B+P’s interior design team focused on creating an environment that is functional, welcoming, and supportive.
Strategically located in the southern part of the city, Fire Station 39 supports growing areas of DeBary while addressing response challenges created by rail traffic running through the city. As the only fire station west of the railroad tracks in western Volusia County, and with close proximity to the St. Johns River, the station plays a critical role in ensuring timely emergency access, including water-related response. The project was driven by the city’s commitment to enhancing fire services without adding financial strain on residents. Fire Station No. 39 is a now vital component of DeBary’s public safety infrastructure, designed to support efficient emergency response and long term community protection.
