Summary

The new Florida Atlantic University Recreation Center that is positioned along the northern corridor of campus has become an important social hub as the University continues to grow. The facility, which was completed in three phases, includes over 54,900 square feet of fitness, gymnasium, administration and support spaces centered around a main, clerestoried lobby. The new center also houses an outdoor pool.

The northern façade of the building is composed of a glass wall which acts as a billboard showcasing the recreation center’s activities to traffic passing by along Lee Street and Campus Drive.

The building can be accessed off of a new plaza to the west, leading pedestrians directly from the campus core into the building. The new plaza, central gathering lobby and prominently displayed fitness activity all serve to enhance campus life by attracting the entire University community to utilize the facility for personal wellness and academic productivity. The new facility includes: 10,000 square feet of fitness area that accommodates 6,000 square feet for cardio equipment and a separate 4,000 square feet for strength training; a 10,500 square foot, two-court, multi-purpose gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and badminton; a 7,400 square foot MAC gym with built-in soccer goals; two multi-purpose fitness studios for classes; a dedicated stretching space; a 3,500 square foot main lobby including a control desk and food concession; a 1,400 square foot student lounge; 5,500 square foot of locker room space; a 2,000 square foot office suite with conference room, offices and departmental reception area; and an equipment checkout suite with laundry facilities; and an outdoor pool, pool terrace, life guard office and supporting pool facilities.
